"How old are you?" is a question that deserves a better answer than just the year. Your passport says one thing. Your doctor's chart says another. But the precise answer — 34 years, 7 months, and 12 days — is something most people never know.

Knowing your exact age matters more than you might think: medical age requirements are often stated in months, sports eligibility uses exact birth dates, and some legal thresholds kick in at a specific number of days, not just years.

Our Age Calculator gives you the full breakdown instantly.

The Quick Answer

  1. Open the Age Calculator
  2. Enter your date of birth
  3. See your exact age in years, months, weeks, days, total days, and total hours

The "as of" date defaults to today but you can change it — useful for calculating age at a past date or a future one.

How Age Is Calculated

The Obvious Part: Years

Count the number of times your birthday has occurred. If today is after your birthday this year, that's your age. If it's before, subtract 1.

Example: Born July 15, 1990. Today is April 19, 2026.

Your birthday hasn't happened yet in 2026, so:

  • 2026 − 1990 = 36, minus 1 = 35 years old

The Tricky Part: Months

After counting full years, count the remaining months. This is where most mental calculations go wrong because of the unequal lengths of months.

Continuing the example: From July 15, 2025 (after the last birthday) to April 19, 2026.

  • July 15 → August 15 = 1 month
  • August 15 → September 15 = 2 months
  • September 15 → October 15 = 3 months
  • October 15 → November 15 = 4 months
  • November 15 → December 15 = 5 months
  • December 15 → January 15 = 6 months
  • January 15 → February 15 = 7 months
  • February 15 → March 15 = 8 months
  • March 15 → April 15 = 9 months

So: 9 months. Then the remaining 4 days (April 15 → April 19).

Result: 35 years, 9 months, 4 days

The Edge Case: February Birthdays

If you were born on January 31, and we're calculating the age as of February 28, how many months is that?

Calendar libraries (and our calculator) handle this using "end-of-month semantics": January 31 → February 28 counts as exactly 1 month, because February 28 is the last day of February — the equivalent position to January 31 in January.

This is the correct interpretation for age calculations.

The Leap Year Case

Born February 29? Your "real" birthday only comes every 4 years. Most legal systems treat your birthday as either February 28 or March 1 depending on jurisdiction. Our calculator uses February 28 as the equivalent in non-leap years.

Age in Days: Why It Matters

Total days alive is more than a curiosity:

Medical: Pediatric dosages and developmental milestones are often expressed in days, not years. A 30-day-old infant and a 45-day-old infant are at meaningfully different stages.

Legal: Some legal deadlines are stated in days from birth. Social security eligibility, certain pension rules, and age-based tax thresholds can depend on your exact day count.

Personal: There's something grounding about knowing you've been on the planet for 13,045 days. It makes time feel both shorter and more precious.

Using the Age Calculator for Different Purposes

Your Current Age

Default use: enter your birthdate, leave "as of" as today. Get your age right now.

Calculate your age now →

Age at a Past Date

Change the "as of" date to any past date to see how old you were then.

Example: How old were you when you graduated, got married, or started your first job?

Age at a Future Date

Set "as of" to a future date to see how old you'll be.

Example: How old will you be when your child graduates high school? When you want to retire?

Someone Else's Age

Enter any birthdate — a child's, a parent's, a historical figure's. The "as of" date can be today or any other date.

Example: How old was Neil Armstrong when he walked on the moon? (Born August 5, 1930. Moon walk: July 20, 1969. Age: 38 years, 11 months, 15 days.)

Age Requirements and Thresholds

Many important milestones have specific age requirements. Here's how to check them:

Most countries set legal age at 18 years. Use the age calculator to find exactly when you or someone else crosses that threshold.

Retirement Age

Pension and retirement eligibility is often age 62, 65, or 67. Calculate your exact date of eligibility:

  1. Enter your birth date in Age Calculator mode
  2. Or use Add/Subtract mode to add 65 years to your birth date

Medical Age Categories

Pediatric care is often broken into:

  • Newborn: 0–28 days
  • Infant: 1–12 months
  • Toddler: 1–3 years
  • Child: 3–12 years
  • Adolescent: 13–17 years

Knowing your child's exact age in days or months matters for developmental screenings and vaccination schedules.

Sports Eligibility

Youth sports divisions are often cut by exact birth date (not just birth year). Youth leagues use "age as of" a specific date in the season. Enter your child's birth date and set "as of" to the league's cutoff date.

How Old Is That Animal?

Age calculators work for more than people:

Dog years: The old "multiply by 7" rule is an oversimplification. The American Veterinary Medical Association suggests a more nuanced calculation based on the first two years aging faster. Our calculator gives you the exact calendar age — from there, consult breed-specific conversion charts.

Historical figures: How old was Shakespeare when he wrote Hamlet? (Born April 26, 1564. Hamlet written around 1600–1601. Age: approximately 36–37 years.)

The "Age as of" Feature

Our calculator lets you set a custom reference date, not just today. This is useful for:

  • Verifying age at a past event (insurance claims, contracts)
  • Calculating prospective age for planning
  • Historical research
  • Checking eligibility as of a specific cutoff date

Click the "Today" button to reset back to the current date at any time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days old am I?

Enter your birthdate in the Age Calculator. The result shows total days. Multiply by 24 for hours — or just look at the total hours figure.

What if I was born on February 29?

Leap day birthdays are handled using February 28 as the equivalent date in non-leap years. You'll see your age calculated correctly either way.

Yes — adjust the "as of" date to any date you want. The default is today, but you can set it to any past or future date.
