How Age Is Calculated
The Obvious Part: Years
Count the number of times your birthday has occurred. If today is after your birthday this year, that's your age. If it's before, subtract 1.
Example: Born July 15, 1990. Today is April 19, 2026.
Your birthday hasn't happened yet in 2026, so:
- 2026 − 1990 = 36, minus 1 = 35 years old
The Tricky Part: Months
After counting full years, count the remaining months. This is where most mental calculations go wrong because of the unequal lengths of months.
Continuing the example: From July 15, 2025 (after the last birthday) to April 19, 2026.
- July 15 → August 15 = 1 month
- August 15 → September 15 = 2 months
- September 15 → October 15 = 3 months
- October 15 → November 15 = 4 months
- November 15 → December 15 = 5 months
- December 15 → January 15 = 6 months
- January 15 → February 15 = 7 months
- February 15 → March 15 = 8 months
- March 15 → April 15 = 9 months
So: 9 months. Then the remaining 4 days (April 15 → April 19).
Result: 35 years, 9 months, 4 days
The Edge Case: February Birthdays
If you were born on January 31, and we're calculating the age as of February 28, how many months is that?
Calendar libraries (and our calculator) handle this using "end-of-month semantics": January 31 → February 28 counts as exactly 1 month, because February 28 is the last day of February — the equivalent position to January 31 in January.
This is the correct interpretation for age calculations.
The Leap Year Case
Born February 29? Your "real" birthday only comes every 4 years. Most legal systems treat your birthday as either February 28 or March 1 depending on jurisdiction. Our calculator uses February 28 as the equivalent in non-leap years.

Total days alive is more than a curiosity:
